Moreton Fig at USC

Moreton Fig

USC has a new fancy restaurant called Moreton Fig (Yelp) in the new student union building. Like The Lab, I am quite impressed with the quality and how much of a step up the food is from Upstairs Commons. The ahi burger was good but the most interesting item they had were the duck fat …

Yo! Philly’s Cheesesteaks in Alameda

Rocky Balboa Cheesesteak

I have only had a few cheesesteaks in my life, but this was the most authentic one that I have had at Yo! Philly’s Cheesesteaks (Yelp) in Alameda, CA. They use actual Amoroso’s Rolls and tons of Cheez Wiz. I got the Rocky Balboa and I have never been to Philadelphia but this was by far the greatest …

French Fries with Gravy, Cheese, & Egg

Disco Fries

We were up in Napa last month and we stopped by Norman Rose Tavern (Yelp) for a quick bite, and I encountered an intriguing take on fries. They had something called “Disco Fries” which was a plate of French fries smothered with pork sausage gravy and cheddar cheese and topped with a sunny side up …

Squeeze Inn Hamburgers

Bacon Cheese Jalapeno Fries

Last month I was up in Sacramento and Gary and I went to the Squeeze Inn (Yelp). Their specialty is a burger that has a “cheese skirt”. For details on how it is done, you can check out the FAQ on their website but they basically use ice chips to steam the cheese. The cheese skirt …

Eggs Benedict with Smoked Salmon

Eggs Benedict with Smoked Salmon

Today’s breakfast was Eggs Benedict with Smoked Salmon. It was an English muffin topped with Costco’s Kirkland Smoked Salmon, a poached egg, Trader Joe’s Hollandaise sauce, green onions, and some pepper. I enjoyed every bite of it and it’s one of the greatest breakfasts I have had recently.

Great American Beer Festival, Wynkoop Brewery, & Jack-N-Grill

Sierra Nevada's Booth

This past weekend, Jessica and I met Hannah and Harrison in Denver, CO for the Great American Beer Festival. Like last year, the GABF was awesome and the number of beers was overwhelming (I believe they had 2000 beers this year). Blue Moon had their peanut butter beer again, New Belgium had several sour beers, …

Costco’s Carne Asada Bake

Carne Asada Bake Sign

The local San Leandro Costco has a new creation at the food court: the carne asada bake. It is similar to a chicken bake except with beef, onions, peppers, and a different sauce. The bake wasn’t bad, but I prefer the chicken bake with its tastier, creamier sauce.

What I Miss in Los Angeles: 8oz Burger

The 8oz and Truffled Potato Skins

Another restaurant in Los Angeles I loved was 8oz Burger (Yelp) in Melrose. “The 8oz” is one of the tastiest burgers I have ever had. The restaurant has a good selection of beers but their cocktails are also amazing. One of the best Moscow Mules I have had was at this place with their use …

Mini-Pizza

Mini-Pizza

Today’s lunch was mini-pizzas. I made the bread with some active dry yeast I picked up at Costco. The sauce was made with Ragu, onions, garlic, ground turkey, and some Charles Shaw Cabernet Sauvignon. Toppings were mozzarella cheese, basil, salame, and capocollo.

A Day of Cooking

Poached Egg and Toast

Lately, I’ve been reading a lot of the Joy of Cooking and other recipes in my collection. I decided to celebrate my freedom this Monday by making myself a poached egg breakfast. This is the second time I’ve ever make a poached egg and I learned from the first time that you need to be …
