Don Pepe’s in Fresno, Part 2

Shrimp Cocktail

I loved Don Pepe’s so much I had to go back 2 more times. Here are some new pictures of other items they offer. Although I am not a huge fan of the beans in a taco, the al pastor taco was really good which makes me realize that their carne asada is just okay. …

La Penca Azul in Alameda

Carnitas Plate

La Penca Azul (Yelp) in Alameda is probably THE Mexican place with its prime location, fun atmosphere, and popularity. I had been wanting to check it out ever since we moved to Alameda and when I saw a Yelp deal for 50% off, I jumped on it. Jessica got the carnitas plate and I got …

Mariscos Guero

Front of Mariscos Guero

Mariscos Guero (Yelp) in Long Beach has some of the greatest Mexican seafood I have had. The restaurant is very low-key and is located in a strip mall. The place was referred to us by Richie’s co-worker. When Richie, Luis, and I arrived, we immediately observed two signs that the food was going to be …

Don Pepe’s in Fresno – Fresno’s Best Mexican Food?

Carne Asada Taco

In my most recent trip to Fresno, I had the pleasure of eating at Don Pepe’s (Yelp) – a small, simple Mexican joint on N. Blackstone Ave. On my first visit, I ordered a carne asada taco and an al pastor super burrito. The carne asada taco was interesting.  I was expecting a taco truck-style …

Longanizadilla (Longaniza Quesadilla) & Chicken Adobo

Longanizadilla

I made a fantastic discovery of the Loganizadilla while experimenting with food. I was making a simple quesadilla and wanted to add some meat. I looked in the fridge and I had some leftover sweet longaniza from breakfast so I simply cut some up and added it. Unbeknownst to me, this was about to become …

Speedy Zapatos in Fresno

Chili Relleno

My family has been going to Speedy Zapatos (Yelp) for as long as I’ve been alive. My grandparents say it is the best Tex-Mex in Fresno and I believe them. I’ve always enjoyed their taco and burrito plates but this past time I got their Chili Relleno and it was probably the best thing I’ve …

Great American Beer Festival, Wynkoop Brewery, & Jack-N-Grill

Sierra Nevada's Booth

This past weekend, Jessica and I met Hannah and Harrison in Denver, CO for the Great American Beer Festival. Like last year, the GABF was awesome and the number of beers was overwhelming (I believe they had 2000 beers this year). Blue Moon had their peanut butter beer again, New Belgium had several sour beers, …

Costco’s Carne Asada Bake

Carne Asada Bake Sign

The local San Leandro Costco has a new creation at the food court: the carne asada bake. It is similar to a chicken bake except with beef, onions, peppers, and a different sauce. The bake wasn’t bad, but I prefer the chicken bake with its tastier, creamier sauce.

What I Miss in Los Angeles: Chano’s

Carne Asada Fries

One of the great restaurants I miss in Los Angeles is Chano’s (Yelp) close to USC. Here’s a picture of their Carne Asada Fries. What you see here was literally two and a half meals for me.

Eggplant with Beef and Miso and Pork Mole

Eggplant with Ground Beef & Miso

Today’s dinner was a side of eggplant with ground beef and miso and hickory smoked pork with mole and Spanish rice. The eggplant was sautéed with ground beef, miso, sugar, sake, garlic, green onions, and chili oil. It’s not as sweet as our favorite nasu miso dish at Honda-ya (Yelp), but the ground beef does make the …
